On Rachel Bilson’s podcast Broad Ideas on Monday, the actor said that he and his girlfriend are in love and getting married. Tommy Dorfman didn’t say much about her new partner, calling her “just a gay girl.” However, she did say that their relationship has been “very affirming” and that she’s ready to “spend the rest of her life” with her.
The 13 Reasons Why star said that she’s always been interested in dating women, even though she’s been married to a gay man for the past five years.
She said, “I knew I was interested in women in a way I hadn’t been since high school.”
“I had this unresolved thing I hadn’t looked into.
I told myself, “This is the year I’ll go out on dates with girls again and not feel embarrassed about it.”
In February of this year, Dorfman and her ex-husband, Peter Zurkuhlen, decided to go their separate ways. A mutual friend brought the two of them together in 2005, and they got engaged in April 2015.
The next year, in November 2016, they got married in a small ceremony in Portland, Maine.
Dorfman came out as a transgender woman in an interview for the cover of Time magazine in July 2021. She said that her transition had changed the way her marriage worked, which was only natural.
“I was with a gay man for nine years. During that time, I was thought of as having a more masculine body.
“I love him so much, but we’ve learned that what I’m interested in as a trans woman isn’t always what a gay man is interested in,” she said.
“So, we’ve had great talks to change how we see each other as friends.
“Making the change has been freeing and clear.”
The actor also said that because of her transition, it’s almost like going through puberty all over again as an adult.
“Some days I feel like I’m 14.
Because of this change, I now look for different kinds of romantic relationships,” she said.
Dorfman told InStyle a month after coming out in public, “I’ve never felt better in my life.
I spent 28 years of my life feeling suicidal, depressed, and trying to quit drinking and using drugs.
I don’t think I’ve ever been truly happy before this past year.”
